Supervision Expectations
Clinical supervision is a cornerstone of professional development at SCCS. Below you will find our supervision expectations, discipline-specific requirements, and direct links to the Virginia Board of Counseling and Board of Social Work for registration and licensing information.
General Supervision Expectations
Applicable to all supervisees at SCCS
Attend all scheduled individual supervision sessions (minimum one hour per week)
Attend all scheduled group supervision or peer consultation sessions (one to two hours per week)
Come prepared to each supervision session with cases to discuss, questions, and documentation for review
Maintain accurate and up-to-date supervision logs as required by the Virginia licensing board
Implement feedback and recommendations provided by your clinical supervisor
Notify your supervisor immediately of any ethical concerns, safety issues, or clinical emergencies
Maintain confidentiality of all client information discussed during supervision
Actively participate in your own professional development and self-reflection
Supervision Structure at SCCS
Each supervisee is assigned a dedicated clinical supervisor who holds full licensure (LPC or LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is approved by the relevant licensing board to provide supervision. Supervision sessions are structured to include case conceptualization, treatment planning review, ethical discussions, and professional development. All supervision hours are carefully documented using standardized logs that meet Virginia board requirements.

Discipline-Specific Requirements
Supervision requirements differ based on your discipline and the licensing board that governs your practice.
Counseling Track
For Residents in Counseling working toward Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure under the Virginia Board of Counseling.
Residents in Counseling must be registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling before beginning supervised practice
A minimum of one hour of individual, face-to-face supervision per week is required
Group supervision may supplement but not replace individual supervision requirements
All supervision must be provided by a board-approved supervisor who holds full LPC licensure in Virginia
Supervision logs must be co-signed by both the supervisee and the supervisor
Virginia requires a minimum of 3,400 hours of supervised practice for LPC licensure (hours may vary; verify with the Board)
Supervisees must maintain professional liability insurance throughout the supervision period
Social Work Track
For Social Work Supervisees working toward Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) licensure under the Virginia Board of Social Work.
Social Work Supervisees must register their supervision plan with the Virginia Board of Social Work
A minimum of one hour of individual, face-to-face supervision per week is required
Group supervision may supplement but not replace individual supervision requirements
All supervision must be provided by a board-approved supervisor who holds full LCSW licensure in Virginia
Supervision logs and plans must be maintained and submitted to the Board as required
Virginia requires a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience for LCSW licensure (hours may vary; verify with the Board)
Supervisees must maintain professional liability insurance throughout the supervision period

SCCS will assist you in understanding the requirements, but the registration process must be completed by the individual. Register with the Virginia Licensing Board
Before beginning supervised practice in Virginia, you must be properly registered with the appropriate licensing board. Counseling residents register with the Board of Counseling; social work supervisees register with the Board of Social Work. Interns and practicum students should verify their program's requirements with their university.

Application Review & Interview
Our team will review your application and contact you within 5 to 7 business days. Qualified candidates will be invited for a brief interview (in-person or virtual) to discuss your goals, supervision needs, and fit with the SCCS team.

Onboarding & Agreement Signing
Accepted applicants will complete the onboarding process, which includes signing the finalized supervision or practicum agreement, providing proof of liability insurance, and scheduling your first supervision session. Interns and practicum students will also coordinate with their university faculty supervisor.

Typical Timeline
The entire process — from application submission to your first supervision session — typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on scheduling and the completeness of your application.
